 According to the Mayo Clinic bipolar disorder causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). It's among the most common mood disorders but that does not mean it's as simple as moodiness. On the contrary it's a complex range of symptoms that present uniquely in terms of severity and expression for each individual case.

In the case of Bipolar II you have hypomanic and depressive episodes but have not had an episode of mania.
